Just before I left for Australia I picked up some new books (and other media). In this collection was Social Emergence, which really has my attention as it fills in many of the gaps I knew I had in understanding social interactions. The book is more academic than popular reading, but it is what I really wanted. It gets into the complexities, which I now feel better leaving intact for examination of social interactions. It also ties Durkheim into the understanding, which is a core part of the foundation I was missing (I prefer to work in to things I do not understand from angles I do grasp).
I feel fortunate to have purely stumbled upon this book in Blackwells in Oxford last Fall. While I felt less impressed with Blackwells than when I lived in Oxford in the late 80s, I did have a few good finds, which is one of my important measures for a good bookstore. I picked up another favorite bookstore in Oxford on that trip, QI Bookshop, which is a whole new take on bookstores and creates a great collision space for ideas and surfacing books of interest all in an order of magnitude or two less bookshelf space than Blackwells.
